Number patterns

Strategy card

Find the rule by writing the differences.

  1. Step 1: Write the difference between each pair of numbers.
  2. Step 2: If the differences are the same, keep adding it.
  3. Step 3: If they grow, look for a pattern in the differences.
  4. Step 4: If numbers jump a lot, try multiplying.

Tip: Try add/subtract first, then multiply/divide, then two rules taking turns.

Worked example

Which number comes next?

5, 6, 9, 14, 21, ?

  • A: 30 (the answer)
  • B: 33
  • C: 23
  • D: 27
  • E: 28
