Matrix rules

Strategy card

Matrices can hide two or three rules at once.

  1. Step 1: Find the rule across rows (shape, color, count…).
  2. Step 2: Find the rule down columns.
  3. Step 3: Look for "each one appears once in every row" patterns.
  4. Step 4: Build the missing picture in your head, then find it.

Tip: Each row may contain one of each shape, like Sudoku.

Worked example

Which figure completes the matrix?

red star
striped red star
outlined red star
red diamond
striped red diamond
outlined red diamond
red circle
striped red circle
question mark, the missing picture?
  • A: outlined red circle (the answer)
  • B: striped red circle
  • C: outlined red star
  • D: outlined red square
  • E: outlined green diamond

Why: Each column keeps its own fill (solid, striped, outlined, left to right). Each row keeps its own shape (star, diamond, circle, top to bottom). So the missing figure is the outlined red circle.
