Unknowns and balances

Strategy card

An equation is a balance: both sides stay equal.

  1. Step 1: Find the unknown (the box or letter).
  2. Step 2: Undo the operations in reverse order.
  3. Step 3: Do the same thing to both sides.
  4. Step 4: Check by putting your answer back in.

Tip: Substitute your answer back in. It's the quickest check.

Worked example

What number goes in the box?

□ − 9 = 3 × 10

  • A: 42
  • B: 21
  • C: 45
  • D: 39 (the answer)
  • E: 46

Why: 3 × 10 = 30. The box minus 9 is 30, so the box is 30 + 9 = 39.
