Sorting and odd one out

Strategy card

Classification means finding the narrowest rule all members satisfy.

  1. Step 1: List candidate shared features.
  2. Step 2: Choose the most specific one that every member has.
  3. Step 3: Test options; the distractors usually share a looser feature.
  4. Step 4: For odd-one-out, find the rule three share and the fourth breaks.

Tip: Be suspicious of a rule that would also fit the wrong answers.

  • A: oxygen
  • B: argon
