Matrix rules
Strategy card
Matrix reasoning is systematic rule induction across two dimensions.
- Step 1: Decompose each cell into features.
- Step 2: Test rule types for each: constant, progression, distribution of three, combination.
- Step 3: Derive the missing cell feature by feature.
- Step 4: Eliminate options systematically; confirm the survivor against every rule.
Tip: Write a mini-table of features if you get stuck; it makes hidden rules visible.
Worked example
Which figure completes the matrix?
- A: big outlined red diamond
- B: big striped purple diamond
- C: outlined purple diamond
- D: big outlined purple diamond (the answer)
- E: big outlined blue diamond
Why: Each row keeps its own size (small, medium, big, top to bottom). Every row has one of each color (purple, red, blue), so the last row needs the one that is missing. Every row has one of each fill (outlined, striped, solid), so the last row needs the one that is missing. So the missing figure is the big outlined purple diamond.
