Spot the Mistake · Answer Key
Check the answers together. If an answer is different from yours, talk about how each of you got there. Both ways of thinking are worth hearing.
1. States of matter
A kid asks the AI: “What happens to water when it changes?”
The AI answers: Water is amazing because it can change form. Here are four facts:
- Statement A: Melting is when a liquid turns into a solid, like water turning into ice. ← the mistake
- Statement B: Water can be a solid (ice), a liquid, or a gas (water vapor).
- Statement C: Evaporation is when liquid water turns into a gas called water vapor.
- Statement D: Condensation is when water vapor cools and turns into tiny drops of liquid water.
Answer: A. Melting goes the other way: it's when a solid turns into a liquid, like ice turning into water. Turning a liquid into a solid is called freezing. The AI swapped melting and freezing!
2. Oceans
A kid asks the AI: “Tell me about Earth's oceans.”
The AI answers: Most of our planet is covered by ocean. Here are some ocean facts:
- Statement A: The Pacific Ocean is the largest ocean on Earth.
- Statement B: Many maps show five oceans: the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Southern, and Arctic.
- Statement C: The Arctic Ocean is the smallest ocean.
- Statement D: The Atlantic Ocean lies between North America and Asia. ← the mistake
Answer: D. The Atlantic Ocean lies between the Americas on one side and Europe and Africa on the other. The Pacific Ocean is the one between North America and Asia.
3. Fractions
A kid asks the AI: “Can you tell me some facts about fractions?”
The AI answers: Fractions describe equal parts of a whole, like pizza slices. Here are four facts:
- Statement A: 1/2 of a pizza is more than 1/3 of the same pizza.
- Statement B: 1/8 is bigger than 1/4, because 8 is bigger than 4. ← the mistake
- Statement C: One fourth of 20 is 5.
- Statement D: The fraction 3/4 is the same amount as 0.75.
Answer: B. With the same whole, a bigger bottom number means the whole is cut into more pieces, so each piece is smaller. 1/8 is half the size of 1/4. The AI's “because” sounded smart but didn't prove the claim.
4. Bugs
A kid asks the AI: “Tell me about insects and spiders!”
The AI answers: Bugs are everywhere! Here are four bug facts:
- Statement A: Spiders are insects, just like ants and bees. ← the mistake
- Statement B: Adult insects have six legs.
- Statement C: Spiders have eight legs.
- Statement D: A caterpillar changes into a butterfly or moth while it is in a cocoon or a chrysalis.
Answer: A. Spiders are arachnids, not insects. Insects have six legs and three body parts. Spiders have eight legs and two body parts. Scorpions and ticks are arachnids, too.
5. Telling time
A kid asks the AI: “Can you explain some ways we say the time?”
The AI answers: We have lots of ways to say the time. Here are four:
- Statement A: There are 60 minutes in one hour.
- Statement B: “Quarter past 3” means 3:15.
- Statement C: “Half past 6” means 6:30.
- Statement D: “Quarter to 5” means 5:15. ← the mistake
Answer: D. “Quarter to 5” means 15 minutes before 5 o'clock, which is 4:45. The AI mixed up “quarter to” (before the hour) with “quarter past” (after the hour).
6. Cause and effect
A kid asks the AI: “Why do ice cream sales and sunburns both go up in summer?”
The AI answers: Good question! Here are four things to think about:
- Statement A: More people buy ice cream on hot, sunny days.
- Statement B: People can get sunburned when they spend time in strong sunshine without protection.
- Statement C: Eating ice cream causes sunburns, because both go up at the same time in summer. ← the mistake
- Statement D: Wearing sunscreen and a hat helps protect your skin from the sun.
Answer: C. Two things can go up at the same time without one causing the other. Here, hot sunny weather is the real reason for both: it makes people want ice cream, and it gives them sunburns.
